Oaxaca de Juárez is located in the same-named state and is one of the most important tourist destinations in Mexico due to its cultural, artistic and culinary heritage. Oaxaca rises from the valley like a colorful pinwheel. The colonial-style buildings are painted in every color imaginable, from cobalt and crimson to ocher and light green. As the capital of the state of the same name, Oaxaca holds the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its history and cultural influence. It was an important city for the ancient Zapotec tribe before receiving its cobblestone streets and colonial architecture under Spanish influence. Today, the city is a perfect meeting of the old and the new Mexico, with beautiful boutiques, spacious plazas, narrow streets, trendy cafes and nice hotels. Oaxaca has a very lively art scene, housed in the Oaxaca-typical colorful flat-roofed houses, as small galleries. Not far outside the city is the archaeological site of Monte Alban, an important Zapotec city and one of the best preserved ruins in Mexico.
