Bogota is located in the center of the country at an altitude of about 2,600 meters and enjoys an almost perfect climate with average temperatures between 9 and 23 degrees Celsius. Getting around the city is relatively easy and inexpensive thanks to the innovative TransMilenio metro bus system. There is much to do and see in the city. Highlights include the colonial-style buildings in La Candelaria, the Gold Museum with its unique collection of pre-Columbian goldsmithing, the view from the Monserrate Monastery overlooking the city, and the Botanical Gardens, which resemble a miniature national park. Colombia still suffers from an image of lawlessness fueled by the activities of guerrilla groups and drug cartels. Fortunately, violent crime has dropped dramatically in recent years, due in large part to improvements in the security situation. Of course, travelers still need to be careful in Bogota, as in any other major city, but the vast majority of visitors will experience nothing but warmth, hospitality, honesty and courtesy.
