Exeter
Exeter has been the centre of Devon since Roman times. Devon , together with Cornwall, makes up the West Country, which is home to more pre-historical monuments and ancient sagas of knighthood than other region in Great Britain. One of the old taverns in Exeter is even said to have been the favourite place of Sir Francis Drake. The historical university town with a marvellous cathedral has 100.000 inhabitants and conveys a leisurely atmosphere. It is an ideal starting point to trips to the sea or in the national parks of Dartmoor and Exmoor. The coast to the east of Exeter is a rocky one whereas the western coast makes up the 'English Riviera' with sandy beaches and palm trees.
